4. Reducing Street Animal Overpopulation in Panama

Did you know that an unspayed female dog, and her mate, and all their offspring and their offspring’s puppies can add up to 67,000 dogs in just six years!? And cats also have the same staggering statistics! Unfortunately, there aren’t enough homes to take care of the potential numbers of animals that can be born. And, what’s worse, is that most of these unwanted animals end up with a terrible quality of life. This was a problem that Patricia Chan was observing on the streets of Panama.  Pat decided to do something about it and created Spay Panama. Spay Panama’s vision is to improve animal welfare and put a stop to animal cruelty by controlling the overpopulation of dogs and cats through intensive sterilization campaigns. They provide high-quality sterilization services at low cost for animal rescuers, feeders, and families of low means. Their #1 goal is to avoid unwanted litters.

To date, they have operated on over 200,000 animals!

Some highlights from our talk:

  • (2:32) What an overpopulation of street animals looks like in an area.
  • (5:26) What are the benefits of spaying and neutering?
  • (7:25) Why catch and release is the best strategy for strays (when a good home isn’t available)?
  • (11:52) How does Spay Panama work?
  • (18:08) What are some successes over the years?
  • (23:42) What keeps you motivated?
  • (24:22) What can people do wherever they are to help?

What you can do to make a difference for unwanted animals:

  • Spay and neuter your pet
  • Adopt your next pet, don’t shop for it
  • Teach compassion to our children. If they grow up learning to care for those less fortunate, they will do so as adults.
  • Go to the Spay Panama clinic and buy a calendar. Who cares if it’s March, it has cute cat and dog pictures. 😉
  • Donate to Spay Panama
  • Volunteer with your local spay campaigns. Reach out to your local shelter or veterinarian to find out how. Or, if you’re in Panama, volunteer with Spay Panama! They can use weekday help in their Panama City office or weekend help at one of their campaigns.
